How can a website that does not sell a product, make money?

I wanted to start a blog/ informational site. I was curious as to how something like this could make money. I understand Google Adsense is one way.

Can you use Adsense with other banner programs?
Will search engine optimization bring in any direct money?
If I am not selling anything, is the only way to make money through advertising?

You can make money through PPC ads (Google Adsense is the most popular, but there are other options) or by selling other people’s products via affiliate links. So, if your website is just music reviews, you could post links to Amazon, iTunes, etc., to the relevant albums and you would get a rip anytime someone bought something using your link.

The majority of site revenue comes from advertising, a well established site with good page rank can sell backlinks to other sites, though done improperly this can kill the authority of your site.

I know the best returns from banners are gained when there is no adsense on the same page, sorry I don’t recall the TOS regarding mixing ads with adsense, generally it’s lower paying and best to just fill spaces on secondary pages with it.

Of course there are training sites that charge a monthly membership fees, automatic monthly billing can make for a secure source of income.

Here’s how you can make money online. First, open up a Google Adsense account, next create a news portal that grabs the latest news headlines from sites like cnn, nytimes etc (There are tools that do this for you, you don’t need to know how to program). Finally, insert a couple of adsense ads on the page and you’ve got yourself an automated income producing website. If you’re interested in this idea, here’s a site that discusses it in details:
